I am launching my first ever stationary range with Christine in September, under the Everything Alice brand. We both along with our publisher Quadrille have been so delighted by the success of the book, we have actually managed to sell out ( second print coming next week) hopefully the stationery will share the luck!
The ideas for this range for me were quite instant; when you think of Alice you think of Eat Me and Drink Me, which seemed perfect for notecard ranges. Although I did also think the Madhatters Hat box would be a great idea for notecards too, but after several attempts, the hats just weren't clear enough and ended looking like... well im not sure!
The Drink Me notecards were my first idea, I sketched them out onto sheets of A4 paper last Christmas and was delighted by the idea of having a box of cards which contianed an entire mix-match china tea set; with teacups, teapot and milk jug!
The Eat Me notecards were also fun to do, the bright colours of the cupcakes & cake slices really lend themselves to the paper cut designs. My favourite slice was the red one, which you can see gained inspiration from one of my failed hat designs.
Then onto the Queen of Hearts Cake Stand. I really love all the disposable cake stands on the market, they are a brilliant idea. But I feel a lot of them are so computer generated, they loose some of their beauty. Our cake stand has been 100% created from my wonky illustrations & is reversible, so you can use it at least twice or more.
And finally the notebooks, I cant take responsibility for these beauties as they were created by the incredible designer that is Christine Leech. I absolutely love them, we used screen prints onto brown cardboard which looks fantastic, they are the sort of thing you need to touch and feel to really appreciated them.
The first step in this process was to approach the publisher with our ideas, we had eight in total that we had been working on, hopefully the other ideas will make it out there soon too. After a meeting, we selected the four we wanted to go for. I went off and created the illustrations, of course spending hours and hours cutting up small pieces of paper. In the meantime we had to decide on the size and shape of the boxes that the notecards would be contained in. The initial packaging was really too large so as we went along things got smaller and more elegant. We also needed to decide on the finish, in an ideal world, we would have gone for a matt finish on the boxes, however this gets so filthy on shop shelf ( and no-one wants to buy something that doesn't look pristine) we went for a semi-gloss finish.
I designed a rough outline for how I wanted the boxes to look and Christine went off and created her Adobe magic and made them look fantastic. She made sure each notecard has a little Alice quote on it and under every opening of the boxes is a little pretty print surprise!
We received our first samples recently of all of the products, I have already used all my notebooks, sent out about 50% of the notecards... oh yes, its great to see the look on peoples faces when they actually realised I designed the card they are opening!
The Everything Alice Stationery Range will be out early September, available from Amazon and all good retailers. Published by Quadrille Publishing Ltd.
